A new study published at International Journal of Cancer, have attracted the attention toward some new reveals. 36,000 men participated in the study for an observation period of 25 years. Participants revealed info about their lifestyle, diet, physical activity and medical and family history.
Findings of the Study
At the end of the study period, scientist found out that the risk of prostate cancer was reduced for people who consumed mushrooms.
- Men who consumed mushrooms once of twice per week, face 8% less risk to be diagnosed with prostate cancer (compare to men that had no mushrooms in their diet).
- Men who consumed mushrooms more than three times per week, face 17% less risk to have prostate cancer.
Quite interesting findings indeed. But, not a huge surprise for the researchers. Mushrooms contain an element called ergothioneine, a strong antioxidant and very active against the cancer cells. Its action does not allow the cancer cells to grow. This is the reason scientist call mushrooms the preventive-food for prostate cancer. Definitely, next step is to ask men in risky categories and men in general to eat mushrooms on regular basis.
